Work hard, and be interested. Read around the subject. The best way to become the best engineer is to know all you can about things other people have done/are doing! experience and knowledge is just as important as the grades you get. Also, so a placement year! It is so much easier if you take that year of experience.

Completely agree with what Ryan said! The other thing I’d recommend is to get involved with as many different things as possible. There’s probably a society for the engineering course which run different types of events focused around engineering and there will be lots of societies to join at the Students’ Union. Doing things outside of the engineering course is fun and helps develop additional skills such as organisation, teamwork and communication. Also being able to talk about something other than your degree in interviews is a plus!

I agree with what has already been said . I highly recommend her to do work placements or work experience in different engineering areas as employers love industry experience or knowledge – also it will help her to know what type of engineering suits her and what interest her more .

Ryan, Matt and Allanah have covered it really well! I’d start by looking at which companies operate in your area and seeing what STEM / Internship / Work Experience opportunities they offer.

Whilst she’s still at university, I suggest she gets in local engineering companies and see if she can get a paid internship, she could either do it during the summer break or for year once she’s finished. Alternatively, she could do a graduate apprenticeship scheme, the scheme includes doing a community project, outward bound and a rotation within the company.
