• Question: What advice would you give to help encourage young children to explore the world of engineering?

      Step out your comfort zone and seek opportunities. Even if it is work experience in a company or attending a STEM careers fair learning more about the industry and building a network.

      Maybe seek a mentor or a coach that can help you understand the world of engineering and they can help point you in the correct direction.

      Just be passionate and interested. Ask as many questions as possible. Read all the books you can find on the subject you find interesting. Find out people who do the job you want and find out how they got there. There are plenty of STEM ambassadors out there, and they all are willing to help answer your questions.

      I think Allanah and Ryan have covered it really well – if you are interested in engineering, seek opportunities through STEM events, school activities/clubs, and always ask lots of questions – there is no such thing as a silly question!

      For your work experience, I suggest you investigate local engineering companies and spend a week shadowing an engineer. It will also give you experience of what it’s like to be at work for a week. If your town or city holds community events, local engineering companies might be attending running air rocket or similar activities for you to try. Many schools run careers carousels during year 9/10; these give you the opportunity to interview engineers who will be able to give you literature about exploring engineering. Try and get experience doing hands on STEM activities as well attending career days as it will show you how many opportunities are available to you.

      Definitely agree with what everyone else has said – just try out as many different things as possible and take advantage of any STEM events which you come across.
